Andrea Dotta is an Italian comic artist and colorist, who has worked on several international comic productions. Through Comicup Studio in Barcelona, he contributed to Mickey Junior (Disney France), Pferd & Co. (Blue Ocean Entertainment in Germany) and Zo Zit Dat in the Netherlands, for which he drew the gag comic 'Professor Breinstein' (2017-2019). He also made the webcomic 'Johnny Dynamic' (2014-2015) and was part of the artist team behind 'Hotline Miami: Wildlife' (2016), based on the video game of the same name. In 2023, he drew the youth graphic novel 'I Tre Baskettieri' for Colber Edizioni.
Early life and career
Born in 1989, Andrea Dotta studied Animation at the CSC Animazione in Turin from 2009 to 2011. Since graduation, he has been active as a freelance character designer for animation and as a motion graphic artist through studios like Studio Arancia in Turin.
Colorist
Dotta has worked extensively as a comic colorist, starting with the graphic novel 'Don Camillo a Fumetti' by Ennio Bufi (Renoir Comics, 2011). This particular comic book was an adaptation of Giovanni Guareschi's famous humorous novel series 'Don Camillo'. Through studios like Parlapà and Arancia, Dotta did further coloring work for 'Geronimo Stilton' (Bao Publishing), 'Fanboys vs Zombies' (BOOM! Studios) and 'Real Life' (Disney Publishing Worldwide).
Johnny Dynamic
As an artist in his own right, Andrea Dotta made six episodes of his personal webcomic about the grumpy, intergalactic bounty hunter 'Johnny Dynamic' (2014-2015), who was transformed into a giant thumb with enormous physical strength, due to a radioactive finger. Early comic book collections were released by Manfont. For some episodes, Dotta received assistance from Simone Di Meo, Sara Antonellini and Giorgia Lanza. In 2014, the strip was nominated for "Italian Webcomic of the Year". It went into international circulation in 2020, when the Webtoon platform picked it up. In that same year, the cartoonist also released an independently published book collection.
Studio Comicup
From 2015 to mid-2018, Andrea Dotta lived in Barcelona, where he worked for Studio Comicup on several international comic productions, either as artist or as colorist. His Disney work included artwork a couple of 'Donald Duck' stories for the Dutch Disney licensee Sanoma, artwork for the Mickey Junior title by Disney France and character designs for a Disney video game from the USA. In addition, he worked on 'Tom & Jerry' material for Egmont in Denmark, and on the German girls' magazine Pferd & Co, published by Blue Ocean Entertainment.
In early 2017, Dotta succeeded Sònia Albert as the artist of the 'Professor Breinstein' back cover gag comic for Zo Zit Dat, a popular science magazine for children published in the Netherlands by Sanoma. The gags were mostly written by editors Bas Schuddeboom and Jos Beekman. By the end of the year, the comic's full production was handed over to Dutch artist Roel Venderbosch, who was in turn succeeded by Jordi Peters in late 2019. However, in 2019, writer Schuddeboom and Dotta were responsible for the comic pages published in the 'Zo Zit Dat Escape Boek', an escape room in book format.
Hotline Miami: Wildlife
In 2016, Andrea Dotta was part of the artist team of 'Hotline Miami: Wildlife' (2016) by Dayjob Studios, a comic book tie-in series with the Dennaton Games action game. Among the other artists for this production were Alberto Massaggia, Ludovica Ceregatti, Giorgia Lanza and Andrea Errico. After their initial publication in Italy by Dayjob Studio, the title was released in English by Behemoth Comics (2020-2021).
I Tre Baskettieri
In 2023, Dotta was hired by the Italian publishing house Colber Edizioni as the artist of the teen drama basketball graphic novel 'I Tre Baskettieri', written by Marco Ventura. It told the story of fifteen-year-old Turin teenager Dalila, who has only basketball on her mind, but isn't take seriously became she's a girl. Her talent is only recognized by talkative but enthusiastic friend Arturo, who helps her train every day. Her dream is to compete with the boys and make it to the national team.
Tutor
Since September 2017, Andrea Dotta has been member on the teaching staff of the Digital Illustration, Digital Coloring and Motion Graphics courses at the International School of Comics in Genoa. In September 2020, he also compiled the skills of his craft in the self-published 'The Scientific Digital Coloring Guide: for Digital Illustration and Comic Artists'.
