Pauline Mc Peril, by Jack Rickard
'Pauline McPeril'

Jack Rickard studied at the Mechanics Institute of Rochester in New York, and started doing commercial art for the Chaite Studios in the 1950s. He has made the illustrations for a great many advertising campaigns, and in 1961, he began a long collaboration with Mad Magazine. Rickard stood out for his movie parodies for the monthly covers, and also contributed artwork to the Mad paperbacks. He has also made several actual movie posters, like for the 1963 'Pink Panther' film. He additionally assisted on Al Capp's 'Li'l Abner' and drew a newspaper strip called 'Pauline Mc Peril' (1966-1969) with Mell Lazarus for Publishers-Hall Syndicate in 1966-67.

In Mad issue #121 (September 1968), Larry Siegel included a parody of the teen magazine Sixteen, with art by Jack Davis and Jack Rickard. In issue #123 (December 1968), a photo was printed of Sixteen's chief editor, Gloria Stavers reading the spoof of her magazine. In 1978, punk musician Sid Vicious was photographed reading a copy of Mad issue #197 (March 1978), of which the cover was illustrated by Rickard. After Rickard drew Mad mascot Alfred E. Neuman being carried by Superman on the cover of issue #208 (July 1979), to promote their spoof of the Christopher Reeve movie, 'Superman' artist Curt Swan drew the Kryptonian superhero trying to get Neuman out of a telephone booth he wants to change costumes in. The drawing was printed in issue #210 (October 1979).

The cover of Mad issue #240 (July 1983) featured Dustin Hoffman transforming into Mad's mascot Alfred E Neuman, in a parody of the movie 'Tootsie'. A newspaper cartoonist in the San Diego Tribune made the same joke on 15 June 1983, only with U.S. President Ronald Reagan morphing into U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, dressed as Tootsie.

In Mad issue #386 (October 1999), actor Kenny Baker (who played R2D2 in 'Star Wars') was photographed holding issue #196 (January 1978), featuring Jack Rickard's portrait of Alfred E. Neuman as Darth Vader on the cover.
