Born in Havana, Rosendo Gutiérrez graduated as professor from the San Alejandro Academy of Plastic Arts in 1956. He started out working as an industrial and advertising draftsman, and as drawing teacher. He was a contributor to the weekly Zig-Zig and founder of Palante, for which he was editor, cartoonist and scriptwriter. Rosen has also been editor for the magazine Verde Olivo. One of his comic characters is 'Olivito'.
