Hein Auke Kray was born in 1901 in Assen, The Netherlands. He studied painting and drawing with Eduard Houbolt in The Hague in 1922-1923, and it was at this time that he started contributing political cartoons to newspapers De Houten Pomp and De Standaard. He made his debut as a comic artist in 1930, when his strip 'Per Vliegmachine de Wereld Rond' (written by Joustra) was published in newspapers De Nieuwe Provinciale Groninger Courant and De Nieuwe Drentse Courant.
'De Lotgevallen van Pietje en Wietje'.
For these papers, Kray created a total of nine comic strips, such as 'Pikkie and Goudglansje' (1936), 'Baas Blaas, de Tielse Kruidenier' (1938-40), 'Davina's Eekhoorntje' (1946), 'Koos de Fantast' (1951). These four titles were written by Hein Kray's wife, To van Thiel.

Other comics by Hein Kray, appearing in De Standaard, were 'Pietje en Wietje', 'Met Pippie Tater en Simpie Goochem op stap' (1932-33, written by Ad Goede), 'De Broertjes Brand' (1936, written by A.C. Biemond) and 'Vacantie van Kees Knip' (1940, written by Nel van der Vlis). 'Kwiebus Kwast', written again by Kray's wife, appeared in Het Rotterdammer Kwartet, four local papers, in 1939. Hein Kray also illustrated several children's books and was one of the founders of artists group De Drentsche Schilders, which existed until 1953.
