Flamed-out Funnies, by Willy Murphy
'Flamed-Out Funnies'.

Willy Murphy was an underground comix artist during the 1960s and 1970s. He produced a series of comix called 'SF Underground Comix'. His favorite targets of humor were the people around in the San Francisco hippie communities. Murphy's work cleared the way for the underground comix scene, influencing several artists, especially Gilbert Shelton and Paul Mavrides.

Murphy worked for eight years as a copywriter for two major publishing agencies in New York City. In the final two years of his life, he drew for Arcade and the National Lampoon. After his death, Rip Off Press published a series of comics called 'Flamed-out Funnies'. The content of this series is a collection of comic strips drawn by Willy Murphy over the last seven years of his life and was edited by Ted Richards with the help of Gilbert Shelton.

In 1976, Murphy worked with Gilbert Shelton, Gary Hallgren and Ted Richards on  'Give Me Liberty!: A Revised History of the American Revolution' (1976), brought out when the United States celebrated its 200th anniversary in July of that year. The book is a humorous and critical, but well-researched chronicle of the US War of Independence, told in comic book format. Murphy never saw its release, since he passed away that same year from pneumonia. He was only 39. His funeral was attended by Ted Richards, Melinda Gebbie and Justin Green
